What does a missed call really cost your business?
4 min readUpdated 23 September 2026
The short answer
The cost of a missed call is the value of the work you would have won from it. Multiply the calls you miss each week by the share that would have become paying jobs, then by the average value of a job. For example, 5 missed calls a week × 40% that would have booked × a $350 average job is $700 of work a week — about $36,000 a year. Use your own numbers: they're the only ones that matter for your business.
The formula
Missed calls per week × share that would have booked × average job value = work lost per week. Multiply by 52 for a year.
The numbers below are an example only. Replace each one with your own — your phone's call log gives you the first number in a minute.
A worked example
| Step | Example | Where to find yours |
|---|---|---|
| Missed calls per week | 5 | Your phone's missed-call list for a typical week |
| Share that would have booked | 40% | Of the calls you do answer, how many become work? |
| Average job value | $350 | Your invoices for the last month or two |
| Work lost per week | 5 × 40% × $350 = $700 | |
| Work lost per year | $700 × 52 = $36,400 |
Repeat customers make the real number higher: a new customer you win once may come back, refer friends and leave a review. A missed call loses all of that too.
Why so many calls get missed
- You're with a customer, on the tools or driving.
- The call comes after hours or on the weekend.
- Two people ring at once and the second gets voicemail.
- The person who answers the phone is on lunch or leave.
What you can do about it
- 1
Measure it
Count a normal week's missed calls and run your own numbers through the formula.
- 2
Cover the gaps
Voicemail, an answering service, a receptionist or an AI receptionist — our comparison guide explains the trade-offs.
- 3
Make sure calls turn into bookings
A message you return tomorrow often loses to the business that booked the job today.

Common questions
How do I find out how many calls I miss?
Check your phone's missed-call list for a typical week, including evenings and weekends. If calls go to a business line or voicemail, the provider's call log will show them too.
Does a missed call really mean a lost job?
Not always — some callers ring back. But callers with urgent needs, or who are comparing businesses, often call the next one on the list instead of waiting.
